About CJEF

Englands1

Charles and Julia England were educators in the Lexington City School system for more than a combined 50 years as well as impactful community leaders.  Coach England was a mainstay at Lexington Senior High School encouraging all to “Be Somebody.”  His wife, Julia, was “Mother to All,” serving children at South Lexington, Grimes, Pickett, and Dunbar Intermediate schools.  Coach England and Julia England were both successful educators prior to integration at Dunbar and South Lexington schools, respectively.
The impact of their relationships can be seen throughout our community. It is evident on the fieldhouse at Philpott Memorial Stadium, the naming of one of the elementary schools and heard in the spoken memories of all that passed through the halls during their tenure at all of the Lexington City Schools, including Dunbar.
The Englands, as well as the many other dedicated public educators, represent what is right in education. They possessed the ability to build relationships, grow the mind, and love children of all backgrounds.

Charles England Elementary School Staff and Students
The Charles and Julia England Foundation was established to show community support for teachers in the Lexington City Schools in their efforts to provide creative learning opportunities for students.  The CJEF is raising money to support the “Be Somebody” fund.  This fund will be used to grant awards to teachers who wish to implement creative learning opportunities for their students.
Grant applications will be submitted by teachers, reviewed, and awarded by a grant selection committee in the fall of the school year.  The selection committee will be comprised of educational and community representatives who are not directly involved in Lexington City Schools.
The CJEF is operated on a volunteer basis; therefore no financial support is directed to paid positions. The CJEF is an approved 501(c)(3) organization.
